Character Selection and Skill Use

Each character on your team begins with a unique starting skill set, based on their class (e.g. warrior, rogue, mage). These skills define their role in combat — whether it’s dealing damage, applying debuffs, healing allies, or controlling the battlefield.

To act with a character:

  • Click on the character with your mouse to select them.

  • Their available skills will appear beneath your card hand.

  • Click a skill, then target an enemy or ally depending on the skill type.

  • The character will then move and perform the action, consuming 1 Action Point (AP).

Introduction to Combat Mechanics

Combat in Dolven is a tactical and strategic dance between positioning, skill usage, and card play. Every move you make matters — and mastering the rhythm of battle is the key to victory.

Action Points (AP) System

Each character has 2 Action Points per turn resprented by the blue bar beside the character profile. These can be used to:

  • Move on the battlefield grid

  • Use a skill on a target

You can mix and match how you use these — move twice, move and strike, or strike twice if already in position. This opens up a wide range of tactical decisions each turn.

Using cards does not consume Action Points. This allows you to layer card effects strategically on top of your character's own actions.

Card Play in Combat

Cards are used during combat to buff allies, debuff enemies, alter terrain, summon effects, or power up entire columns via the Stone Pillar system. Cards are played separately from Action Points, so you can always mix card strategy with character action.

Spell Cards: Cast directly on characters or tiles for instant effects

  • Mercenary Cards: Placed on Stone Pillars to empower the column and build combos

  • Card Combos: Formed with three cards on a Pillar, granting powerful bonuses and Mana

Grid-Based Positioning

The battlefield is a 4x6 grid. Positioning your characters thoughtfully is vital, especially because:

  • Stone Pillars align with columns — powering every character standing within

  • Area-of-effect skills or spells may hit multiple tiles

  • Elevation and tile manipulation (via spells) can shift the flow of battle

  • Character skill is limited to its range.
