Introduction to the Card System

In Dolven, cards are the heart of your strategy. Every move, attack, and special ability is powered by two core card types: Mercenary Cards and Spell Cards. Mastering how and when to play each type is key to surviving the trials ahead.

MERCENARY Cards represent the warriors, archers, mages, and other allies you summon to join you in battle. These cards are deployed onto the ancient Stone Pillars that form the strategic backbone of Dolven’s battlefield.

SPELL cards are your tools of magic and manipulation. These are played directly onto characters or battlefield tiles and are used to:

  • Heal allies

  • Buff stats (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence)

  • Debuff enemies

  • Alter terrain (e.g. raise/lower tiles, add hazards)

  • Summon creatures or effects

Spell Cards are targeted, meaning you must choose either a character or a tile to cast the effect upon.

Each Mercenary card is tied to one of three core Archetypes—Strength, Dexterity, or Intelligence—and is color-coded accordingly: Red for Strength, Green for Dexterity, and Blue for Intelligence.

Tip: To maximize their power, Mercenary cards should be matched with characters of the same archetype.

For example, placing a Strength (Red) card on a Strength-aligned hero unlocks their full potential, granting the highest possible boost.

CARD COMBO’S

The true tactical depth of Dolven lies in forming card combos on the Stone Pillars using Mercenary Cards. The rune value and suite are the key to forming powerful hand combo’s that will earn you mana and in turn allow you to play more cards.

Similar to poker hands, placing certain combinations on a Pillar triggers Mana rewards.

Hand combo’s to form:

  • Pair

  • Three of a kind

  • four of a Kind

  • Flush

Check the ingame compendium for the full list of combo’s and rewards to match.

Mana: Your Core Resource

  • Every action in Dolven — from playing a Spell Card to placing a Mercenary — costs Mana. Managing your mana wisely is essential to sustaining your strategy across turns.

  • Mana is replenished at the start of each turn and you can also earn mana by making hand combos.

  • Mana can also be used outside of combat to purchase new cards and expand your deck. Building a balanced and synergistic deck is as vital as your tactics on the battlefield.
